Fairway woods, like irons, are progressive in nature; that is, a 3-wood has less loft than a 4-wood, which has less loft than a 5-wood, and so on. Because of that, a 3-wood will go farther than a 4-wood, which will go farther than a 5-wood, and so on.
The typical lofts for irons range from 16 to 48 degrees. Modern day irons have lower lofts than their contemporaries from the old days, caused by the desire of the average golfer to hit the ball as far as the professionals. This was a difference in skill, but the equipment manufacturers were happy to comply. This resulted in the modern day pitching wedge to have a loft similar to an old 8 iron. Nowadays pitching wedges may have lofts up to 45 degrees.
Putters are, of course, designed to be used on the putting green. However, it isn't uncommon for golfers to use their putters from up to a few yards off the putting green, if the turf around the green is cut very low. The key to using a putter from off the putting surface is a low, smooth cut of turf. The fringe or frog hair that circles a green usually qualifies.

Utility clubs should provide the distance of a fairway wood or long iron but with a higher trajectory than what you'd get from a long iron so that the ball gets airborne, flies high and lands soft. The clubs achieve this by using the low profile and weighting of fairway woods to help get the ball in air, while avoiding the digging (divot-taking) nature of irons. In general, they are shorter in shaft length than fairway woods, providing more control.
The gap wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge are often sold separately, or as a 3-club subset. Because the focus with wedges is on accuracy - trying to hit a short shot as close as possible to the flagstick - wedges are often referred to as the "scoring clubs."

There's no substitute for a good golf swing. But brand new golfers can make it easier on themselves by choosing clubs that are geared to higher-handicappers (also known as "game improvement clubs"). Choose irons that are perimeter weighted and cavity-backed. Look at "hybrid" sets, where the long irons (3-, 4- and sometimes 5-irons) are replaced by utility clubs.
