The largest golf clubs are the woods and the largest wood is the driver. The longer shaft of the wood delivers more power to the head, but makes it more difficult to connect the ball with the "sweet spot" of the head which will send the ball straight. A heavy head resists the twisting that will send the ball to the right or left while a lighter head is easier to swing and results in a longer distance.
There is a general consensus that muscle back irons are for highly skilled players, as they need to be hit consistently well and with a high clubhead speed for a player to get the most out of them. Cavity back irons are for the average player, although many professional players still utilize the forgiveness cavity backs provide. Modern iron design is usually targeted towards the average golfer. Many equipment manufacturers mostly produce easy to hit cavity back irons with thick soles.
The terms "utility clubs" and "hybrid clubs" are generally used interchangeably. They denote a category of clubs that combine elements of both woods and irons into their design. This combination of elements from both irons and woods adds up to having having technical features that aid in getting the ball airborne, that dampen the effects of mishits, and other things that are pluses.

Wedge clubs will, when properly struck, produce a very high, arching shot. So if you need to get over a tree, for example, a wedge comes in handy. Or if you're off the green with a big bunker right between you and the flagstick, a high, arching shot with a wedge is a good choice. Because wedge shots have such a high trajectory, they tend to roll very little once they hit the green. More accomplished players can produce a great deal of backspin with a wedge.
Putters are, of course, designed to be used on the putting green. However, it isn't uncommon for golfers to use their putters from up to a few yards off the putting green, if the turf around the green is cut very low. The key to using a putter from off the putting surface is a low, smooth cut of turf. The fringe or frog hair that circles a green usually qualifies.
There's no substitute for a good golf swing. But brand new golfers can make it easier on themselves by choosing clubs that are geared to higher-handicappers (also known as "game improvement clubs"). Choose irons that are perimeter weighted and cavity-backed. Look at "hybrid" sets, where the long irons (3-, 4- and sometimes 5-irons) are replaced by utility clubs. Get a driver with more loft, not less. Pay no attention at all to what the Tour players are using.
