Golf is a sport where individual players or teams hit a ball into a hole using various clubs, and is one of the few ball games that does not use a fixed standard playing area. It is defined in the Rules of Golf as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules."

For beginners, the driver (also called a 1-wood) will be one of the toughest clubs to master. It is the longest club in the bag - a typical length these days is 45 inches - which makes it the toughest to control in the swing.

The yardage gap between irons is generally 10-15 yards. Your 3-iron, in other words, should produce shots that are 10-15 yards longer than your 4-iron. Also, as you move through the set to the shorter, more lofted clubs, the resulting shots will have a steeper trajectory; shots will rise at a steeper angle and fall at a steeper angle.

A newer segment of the golf club market is utility clubs, also known as hybrids, iron-woods and wood-irons. These clubs are designed to take the place of long irons, which are among the hardest clubs to hit for recreational players. The goal is to make an easier-to-hit club that gets the golf ball airborne so the ball lands soft and stops, while still providing fairway wood or long iron distance.

Wedges are clubs that resemble irons and are used to play shorter shots. They are played from rough and hard ground such as sand or the rough, and for approach or advance shots to the greens.

The putter is the most-used club in golf. Think about it: If it takes you two putts per green, you'll use your putter 36 times during a round of golf. Many beginners will need to use it even more than that.

There's no substitute for a good golf swing. But brand new golfers can make it easier on themselves by choosing clubs that are geared to higher-handicappers (also known as "game improvement clubs"). Choose irons that are perimeter weighted and cavity-backed. Look at "hybrid" sets, where the long irons (3-, 4- and sometimes 5-irons) are replaced by utility clubs. Get a driver with more loft, not less. Pay no attention at all to what the Tour players are using.
